Kind Stranger Saves Jewel’s Life
Driving to her Tennessee home along I-65 on January 11, 2007, Ashley Eakins was touched by what she saw: an injured beagle, hurt and alone, on the side of the highway. Being a dog lover herself, Ashley stopped to help the injured dog. With a baby on the way, and already owning two rescue dogs herself, Ashley knew she could not keep the hurt female beagle. But that did not stop her from doing everything in her power to save it.
After no one came to claim the little dog at the animal shelter, Ashley went back to get her. She arranged and paid for the orthopedic surgeries that would save the dog’s life, and sought out an animal rescue group, Agape, to foster the beagle so she could rehabilitate from her injuries and eventually find an adoptive home.
Despite the fact “Jewel” is believed to have sat alone and injured on the side of the road for at least a week, she was quiet and calm with her attending veterinarians, and has a wonderful temperament. Now safely in her foster mom’s care and recovering from a broken pelvis and an FHO surgery, Jewel has been given a second chance at life, thanks to the kindness of a total stranger.
